NAVOTAS’ annual variety show and grand fireworks display which was held to welcome its 108th Foundation Day celebration were dedicated to the victims of super typhoon Yolanda and earthquake in Visayas and Mindanao.
Though there were more popular celebrities that were invited by the local government, a local band from Tacloban City named the Reo Bros got more applause from the city folks during the event.
“The band came from Tacloban City – one of the greatly affected cities during the super typhoon late last year and it performed for thousands of Navoteños who have also experienced themselves a wrath of nature during typhoon Pedring in September 2011,” Mayor Tiangco says.
The city’s Public Information Office said that the event was also designed to educate the residents on how to be prepared for various calamities such as fire, typhoon, flood, storm surge, tsunami and earthquake through an audio video presentation.
“This year, we opted to organize various activities to promote disaster preparedness through a collective effort from the residents. Hindi lang dapat ang lokal na pamahalaan at mga barangay o volunteer groups ang handa kundi lalo’t higit ang mga residente kaya patuloy ang pagsasagawa ng drills at advocacy campaign sa pagiging ligtas sa sakuna sa Navotas,” he says.
Solidarity Walk and Parade
Also as part of its campaign dubbed: ‘Tayo na sa Ligtas na Navotas,’ it held the “Solidarity Walk and Parade” which was participated in by its constituents.
“Ang diwa at tema ng pagdiriwang ng Araw ng Navotas ngayong taon ay aming inaalay sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo sa Visayas at Mindanao,” he says.
Mayor Tiangco adds: “Hindi na bago ang ganitong sitwasyon sa panahon ngayon at lahat ng lugar o lungsod ay maaaring maapektuhan kaya isang kampanya para sa paghahanda sa mga posibleng sakuna tulad nito na maaaring sumalanta sa Navotas ang inilunsad ngayong Enero para sa mga Navoteño.”
Two of the most sought-after actresses today, Jodi Sta. Maria and Shaina Magdayao joined elder brother and former mayor, Rep. Toby Tiangco and key city officials in their floats to celebrate with Navoteños and support the campaign.
Rep. Tiangco, who has been credited for his efforts to transform Navotas into a more progressive and competitive locality since he held the city’s top post for over a decade, hails the cooperation being shown by the city folks to the local government’s programs especially on campaign to keep Navotas a much better place to live in.
“I and my brother will always dedicate our time and resources and we will not get tired as we get inspired by the cooperation and support being displayed by the city residents for a progressive Navotas,” Rep. Tiangco says.
The solidarity walk and parade has served as the culminating activity of the campaign.
